We would like to thank Don Ross and Brooke Miller along with all of you who came out to our sold out show on Feb 10th. It was a fabulous evening of music and some witty banter between the lovely musical couple! We wish all the best to Don and Brooke who were driving back to Toronto the next day and then on to Winnipeg for a concert in 2 days.

We wanted you to know about a special evening coming up from our friends at the American Music Research Foundation. AMRF is dedication to the preservation of American Music, particularly rhythm & blues, jazz and ragtime.

On Saturday March 17th AMRF will present Corey Harris

and the Rasta Blues Experience along with Thornetta Davis and Phil Wiggins.

The concert will be at Callahan’s Music Hall.  This will be another night of great music put on by AMRF and of special note ….these performances will be filmed for PBS.  So take a look at the AMRF link and come out for nice night of music and you might even become part of music history!

Friday February 10^th at Trinity House, MFGS presents Don Ross and Brooke Miller!  We chose Don Ross to be the first performer for MFGS in 2001 in what is now 10 years ago. We are bringing him back for the 4th or 5^th time?  Why? Because we love him and & well actually, he is one of today's true innovators of guitar composition and technique and one of the top guitarists in the world. In September 1996, he managed to do what no other player has done: he won the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice. The competition, held yearly in Winfield, Kansas, cannot be won only with immaculate technique, but the player's music must also display a high degree of emotion and intensity - hallmarks of Don's style. 

Don will share the bill with Brooke Miller who is a fabulous singer songwriter in her own rite (and Don’s wife).  Winner of the 2007 Colleen Peterson songwriting award (conferred by the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals), Brooke is destined for recognition as one of Canada’s strongest new crop of  singer songwriter, Brooke Miller.  Brooke’s career began on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in a loud Brooke has just released her fourth CD, ‘BROOKE MILLER’. “....Miller's vocals serve the melody and the lyrics with a modesty that lets them shine. Happy New Year and 2012 Schedule

We wanted to extend our best wishes for you and yours in this upcoming New Year. We have our 2012 schedule tentativly penned in and wanted you to know about our move to Trinity House  http://www.trinityhouse.org/ .  Trinity house is located in Livonia off of 6 mile and they are a volunteer, non-profit group with a long tradition of supporting acoustic music.   Fullfilling our  mission to support new (or new to us)  fingerstyle artists  and sprinkling a few of our favorites and a touch of great guitarists who even sing a bit. We have a great lineup in store for you in 2012. Again, as part of our mission, all of our artists will host a 2 hour guitar workshop before the concerts. 

Ten years ago Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society presented it's first concert with the only guitarists to win first place twice at the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship (’88 and ‘96). That amazing guitarist was Don Ross.  Don has released over a dozen solo albums as well as collaborative cds with Andy McKee and Men of Steel (Don, Beppe Gambetta, Dan Crary & Tony McManus)Don). We want to send out a huge THANK YOU!!!!  to California Guitar Trio’s Paul Richards, Hideyo Moriya and Bert Lams for an amazingly entertaining musical evening.  Listening to your cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’  after playing Bach is just an example of versatility of your stellar performance.  World class guitarists and great guys to work with.  All the best on the anniversary of your 20 years together.  We saw Hideyo taking some pictures so we will keep in touch with you on your web site www.cgtrio.com and Hideyo’s web cam.

The California Guitar Trio is Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah; Bert Lams of Affligem, Belgium; and Hideyo Moriya of Chiba, Japan. The trio first met in England in 1987 while studying with iconic King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. After touring together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists, the three guitarists convened in Los Angeles and founded The California Guitar Trio in 1991.

The CGT plays a unique style, with guitars weaving an intricate knot work of interlocking parts to form a whole. Richards, Lams, and Moriya can create music which sounds like it is performed on a kind of “super-piano” and at other times unfolds in an ethereal, otherworldly psychedelia. In space, CGT’s music was played to wake the astronauts aboard the NASA space shuttle “Endeavor”. Here on Earth, the trio’s music has been featured extensively on NPR, NBC’s Olympics coverage, and various CBS, CNN, and ESPN TV programs.

In 1991 Paul Richards (USA), Bert Lams (Belgium) & Hideo Moriya (Japan) created the California Guitar Trio (CGT) after initially meeting at Robert Fripp’s (King Crimson) Guitar Craft Course in 1987. The trio has toured worldwide since then frequently sharing the stage with Tony Levin (King Crimson). CGT has released 12 albums: 7 studio CDs featuring original CGT songs and a variety of other works spanning numerous genres, 4 live releases, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music. Lams, who graduated with a concert level degree in classical guitar studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, has also made a solo album of Bach preludes titled ‘Nascent’.  Their 2010 release ‘Andromeda’ was named the Best CDs of 2010 in the instrumental category at the Indie Acoustic Project. Summer is under full swing and we wanted to make a few announcements.  First of all our Fall 2011 Concert Series has been finalized. We are working out the final details on our venue TBD.   Stay tuned for further information but most importantly, save these dates!

November 5th.  California Guitar Trio - What can we say!  After a great show last fall they emailed us to come back to Metro Detroit just as we emailed them to come back to Metro Detroit.   A remarkable trio of guitarists just featured in Guitar Player Magazine, March 2011.  Their CD 'Andromeda'  won the Best Instrumental Album of 2010 at the Indie Acoustic Project. MFGS Picking Party this Sunday,May 1st from 4pm-7pm at Shelest Music Store in Saint Clair Shores. 

This is a non competetive relaxed get together where guitarists can come to play or listen. Hosted by Dave Pierson who will spend some time on an alternate tuning DADGAD, and then open up the time for discussion and performing.  Great opportunity to try a few tunes in front of supportive friends.
